RESULTS OF WOMEN’S POLL The Women’s Rules Study Commission was organized to do exactly as its name implies — to make a thorough, responsible study of women’s rules, to suggest changes where they feel changes are needed, and to present a complete report to the appropriate administrators. It is the hope of the Commission members that this report be well-received and seriously considered. Let It be understood that “women” referred to herein are the women dormitory students of Elon College. Let It be assumed that existing regulations are known to and understood by all concerned with this report. PROVISION I A permanent position, to be filled by two women students, should be created to ensure a voice for Elon women in the determining of their rules. The representatives should be the President of Women’s Interdormitory Council and an appointee of the Student Government President. (Vote: Yes-417, No-1) PROVISION II Room and bathroom checks would be terminated with the stipulation that there be no open food or drink or any pets in the rooms. JUSTIFICATION: The Commission feels that such checks are not required when dealing with college-age women. Of course, since the purpose of these checks is to ensure that health and safety standards remain high, stress would be placed on the absence of open food or drink and of pets. The Commission would require that WIDC provide a system of helping to maintain these standards, possibly through monthly checks and stringent enforcement of high stan dards. (Vote: Yes-410, No-9) PROVISION III Men may enter the dormitories any time their services are needed in transporting heavy objects. A housemother or counselor should be con sulted and ample warning would be given on the halls before they enter. (Vote: Yes-419, No-0) PROVISION IV On March 14, 1973 a resolution to abolish the strict strict campus penalty for women was passed by acclamation in the Student Senate (S. R. 73-3.2). The resolution was authored by Womens Rules Study Commission and endorsed by WIDC. JUSTIFICATION Because of its severity, the Commission feels that extended periods of such confinement could be detrimental to the health of the student. This punishment, also. Is discriminatory in that men students have no such penalty. (Vote: Yes-415, No-4) PROVISION V On March 14, 1973 a resolution to reform the women’s campus penalty was passed by acclamation in the Student Senate (S. R. 73-3.3). The Continued on Page 2
